Grade 5 Guidance-Related activities
BULLY-PROOFING OUR SCHOOL
During the Fall, I meet with all 5th grade students in a classroom setting to discuss bully-proofing our school. When we talk about bullying, we discuss what it "looks like" and what we can do about it. We emphasize THE POWER OF A BYSTANDER, and what it means to be an UPSTANDER! CLASS LESSONS
During Quarters 1 & 2, I teach grade-specific lessons using the Courage to Care curriculum, once a week during the Digital Citizenship class. The class topics focus on transitioning to middle school, getting to know each other, and promoting responsible and caring behavior.
HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
In the Spring, the school counselor works collaboratively with your child's Health teacher and our school Nurse to teach all 5th graders about hygiene and body changes. This is a short, yet important unit within our Health curriculum. Permission slips will be sent home prior to this unit.
TRANSITION ACTIVITIES (SPRINGTIME) - Coastal Ridge Elementary School to YMS
The York Middle School Principal & Counselor have an assembly with the 4th graders at CRES in May. We talk about 5th grade and what the middle school is like. We answer any questions that the 4th graders might have.
Fourth graders visit YMS with their current homeroom class and homeroom teacher. They have a tour and a brief concert performed by our band and chorus. This is another chance for questions & answers.
A few 5th grade students join the YMS Counselor to visit each 4th grade classroom at CRES. The current 5th graders share more information about 5th grade and answer any questions the 4th graders might have.
Parent Information Night at York Middle School for parents of 4th graders, in June. Parents meet staff, hear about 5th grade and tour the middle school.
Fourth graders participate in Step-Up Day at the end of the school year. Students have the opportunity to sit in their 5th grade homeroom and to meet the teacher and students they will be with next year.
Summer Activity through the York Recreation Department - One of our 5th grade teachers offers a two-morning session, in August, for students to become more comfortable with YMS - including lockers!
